First thing to know is how to change your background. Just go to settings > then design, and then click “change background image.”

You can now browse your computer and add an image as long as it’s under 800k in size.

Next, the dimensions. This is important because improperly-sized images can be covered up by your Twitter profile or can start to tile. In most cases, you will want your background to be large enough not to tile. To achieve this, the total image size should be around 1600px wide by 1200px tall. This encompasses almost all screen resolutions. Note there are a variety of options for setting up the size of your design, but no standard. The real problem involved is the resolution settings of the users’ screens. Based on the information found using Web Developer, your best option is designing your Twitter pages to be compatible with the 1024×768 and the 1280×1024 screen resolutions. As for the image size, I would set it to at least 1600×1200.

If you build a left-hand column, popular on many Twitter backgrounds, make sure that it’s small enough not to be covered up by the central Twitter content – many designers suggest smaller than 200px or 235px. More information on dimensions :

File Dimensions: 2048 px by 1707 px
Branding Dimensions: 80 px by 587 px
Coordinates: X=20, Y=14
Horizontal position: 20 px from the left (give yourself some padding)
Vertical position: 14 px from the top (will line up your graphic with the top of the twitter logo. our eyes like symmetry) File size and type according to Twitter: "Images must be smaller than 800k. GIF, JPG, PNG."

Also remember to change the background color to match your image background color so the two won’t clash. Firefox has this great plugin called Web Developer, which lets you see how your Twitter page will look with different resolutions.
